"Syaladnam" Log Home at October 2003

Log building

Before leaving for a stint in the U.K. in 1990 Eddie participated in a summer school run by the Log Builders Association of New Zealand, and tutored by Andrew Dixon, builder and owner of the Mussel Inn, Takaka.

Since returning seven years ago, it has been a plan and dream to build a log house of our own. This project has finally started and was initiated in October 2002, and as of September 2003, is almost 70 % complete (or so we're told by the valuer David Bulman !).

During the first few months of the project, we documented the progress of our long-awaited log house build, including pictures and descriptions, but due to various factors, (including raising of our largest litter - of nine! Mandalay & Burmese kittens, this update has been delayed. For this, we apologise... :-)

Update - October 2003

The rooves covering the main building and the extensive deck/verandah framings are all in place, the ground floor joists are (finally) in place, nogged and (mostly) levelled before the piles are concreted in place. Doors and windows from Vistalite-Metro 2000 are currently being constructed, and will be installed once the total interior logwork has been completely sanded and oiled.

Pre-piping for the waste and water system have begun, network & A/V cabling (CAT5e & RG6) is in place, and the cattery plans are being finalised.

At the risk of having to "eat our words", we hope to be resident before the end of this year, God willing (even if we only have a kitchen, bathroom, bedrrom and cattery!).

Check out the latest updated pic's below, and do feel free to contact us if you'd like more details, or would like to come to the Wairarapa to have a look, or assist; all help greatefully received!
